At this weekend’s Global Marijuana March 2011, South Africans will join millions of people in hundreds of cities around the world, to gather in solidarity of legalizing cannabis – an ancient plant that is widely prescribed by modern medical doctors worldwide and is legal for medicinal use in 15 American states and the District of Columbia along with Canada among others.
The Global Marijuana March (GMM) which was first held in 1999, is an annual march on the first Saturday of every May. The event is hosted internationally by Dana Beal and Cannabis Culture.
The Global Marijuana March is a celebration embracing cannabis culture as a personal lifestyle choice. Participants unite to discuss, promote, entertain and educate both consumers and non-consumers alike.

Really stoked about going to the MJ March.
A little nervous about taking some joints with. The 5oh might see it as open season on Stoners.
Reckon I’ll do some baking on Saturday and take some biscuits with instead.

i agree, Buzz. i was also worried about taking joints with me so i think i’ll blaze before i get there, take nothing inside. then when my buzz wear’s off, i’ll go toke again.
biscuits would be far easier, but i don’t have the luxury of being able to make them unless i’m on holiday or something. got some blunt wraps specially for this weekend.

Hi Dudes and Dudettes,
I went to Rasta House yesterday in the hope of basking in like some minded company and doing a write up for you on how the event went.
Unfortunately, the event was cancelled at the last minute. So nothing to give feedback on other than the venue.
Rasta House is in the heart of Yeoville and will not be to everyone’s taste. It is authentic Rastafarian and therefore does not serve alchohol, this however did not stop the occassional dronkie from coming in to harrass a few of the patrons. If you are not the type to go into a township or leave you car parked in Hillbrow, this is not a venue for you. If you are however open to a new experience and getting in touch with how the folks in Yeoville roll, check Rasta House out. There’s good people, good music and good smoke.
If you went to any of the other gatherings, please send us some pictures and your thoughts on how it went.
[Reply]
Yes pity it was cancelled at the last minute as it was looking good until 2:00am Saturday when the seams started splitting. Rasta House I can agree is not everyones cup of tea, but its also in the process of being revamped and a new first level being added. The parking is an issue, but can assure you their security is tight, and not one car has been stolen on the street, or parking at the back.
There is a drunk at every location in the country, and damn they can be frustrating, but at the end of the day this is one good reason why herb should be legal, you dont get that from herb smokers.

Nobody pitched for the Cape Town event. I was in the Company Gardens from 2:30 to 4:30 and saw nobody/nothing that resembled stoners or a march. Really disappointing.

No man, that is terrible, i actually just sent a mail to the organiser of CT to see how things went. Seems Durban happened with a lovely picnic and some Kandy Kush, Soweto went down like an african rain storm, finished at 4:30, JHB was cancelled last minute Sunday, and George is possibly still going, who knows.

I know, it sucks dude… I went at 4:20 (Assuming the gathering/march would start at 4, as described on norml’s event) but there was no body to be seen… So I ended up cruising to a friend and celebrating there.
Really bad, last minute organisation imho… Waste of time. If you’re going to create and organise an event, ensure that there is something organised!
To organise an event, no matter its type, requires organisation and someone (a representative) to be there and make sure its all co-ordinated. You can’t just give an arb location and expect people to rock up.
I hate saying stuff like this; but hopefully next year?

Yes, hopefully next year.
I did sit down with 3 other guys who drove through from Stellenbosch, and they were equally dissapointed. Definitely think there needs to be a stronger message sent next time.
There is also the annual Nyabinghi being held later this year at Monwabisi.
[Reply]
Well great that you still celebrated like us in JHB, Durbs and possibly George. The purpose of the event is cannabis awareness and like you did, a badly organised did not stop you, but it stopped a few. Its been held very successfully and well organised in the past by individuals, imagine what we could do and really show support of this worldwide effort for awareness and unity., easily thousands may attend a well organised event.
May I ask a silly question, why is that you could not back link any articles written to norml’s GMM webpage, was their a specific reason for that?
[Reply]
Could we not organize one exclusive to cape town awareness??
would that work? or would we all be arrested?
i think it would be awesome to see a whole bunch of like minded individuals all expressing there opinions on marijuana at a specific location.
puff puff pass:)
[Reply]
We should definately organise one for cape town, if someone just sets sum dates and times I”ll organise atleast 50-100 people. I rate the 20th of april .. Legalize it….NOW!

Anyone from JHB going? I would like to, not too sure about the venues though, why Yeoville? I know the Rasta house is there but seems a little separatist to me…
[Reply]
Rasta House was this year.

SEE YOU GUYS SATURDAY NICE AND EARLY!!!
[Reply]
I was wondering. Will people be smoking during the march? I would hope not as that may send a bad impression to the gov. That stoners would blatantly disregard the law in front of them.
[Reply]
they smoke j’s in the uk when they march or have a 4/20 meet up in hyde park etc
[Reply]
I think the organisers asked for it to be kept clean. The culture is a lot bigger and more open in the UK, US and Canada, and therefore they can all blaze in front of cops no problem. Not sure if it’s a good idea for this march, but if you can’t help yourself then try be discreet
Otherwise just make sure arrive nice and gaffed.
